Support groups offer the chance to draw on collective experience
and can help to improve mood and decrease psychological distress
Participation in a support or bereavement group may give some people an emotional connection when they are feeling isolated from friends and family – and offers the opportunity to release powerful emotions you may otherwise keep inside.
A safe and welcoming environment filled with compassion and understanding can also reduce any stigma you may feel about the mental health or other challenges you are facing. Talking with others who may be facing similar feelings may also help you to improve or find new coping skills, or ways to address the problems other family members may be facing.
JFS Buffalo facilitates ongoing or short-term support groups in the following areas:
- Loss of a Child
- Bereavement
- Gay / Lesbian / Transgender (transition and acceptance?)
- Problem and Compulsive Gambling
